You see, my dad grew up on a potato farm way up in Northern NY. He would pay for the education of his children. He had 9 in total. As long as they showed reasonable effort and grades he was happy to pay the school bills. As we entered the bank that day, he stopped me and asked, as if he already knew the outcome of his question. In one last attempt he said to me, “Son, I don’t think you are serious enough about going to college.”

I responded confidently of course, “Aw dad I am ready, I want to study pre-med and the whole 9 yards!” So his response back to me was, “here’s the deal son…” We will go ahead and take out this loan. If you complete your schooling, I will pay for it but if you don’t finish you will own this loan!”

“Deal!” I said.

There we were all 3 of us sitting at this huge rectangular table, my dad and me and the loan officer. Now at this point the loan officer had to be laughing his backside off because he certainly knew Dr. Gagnier. “Dr. Gagnier taking out a school loan, really?”

Well, my Dad was right after all. I crashed and burned in just 3 semesters. Fortunately, the Navy paid off that 7k school loan because I had joined their Nuclear Power Program.
